“Urgent Need to Combat Pine Processionary Beetle” – BRTK

An action was organized in cooperation with the Lefke Environment and Promotion Association and Environment Platform, supported by the Lefke Municipality and non-governmental organizations in the region, to raise awareness about the protection of forest areas in the country and to call for action against the pine processionary beetles.

The event, held in the forestland between Lefke and Çamlıköy, saw the participation of various organizations and individuals committed to safeguarding the environment. Lefke Environment and Promotion Association President Münevver Ebedi emphasized the urgency of addressing the issue of pine processionary beetles, stating that previous efforts have not yielded the desired results. She highlighted the lack of budget allocation for this problem in the Forest Department and stressed the importance of implementing biological integrated control measures.

Lefke Mayor Aziz Kaya pointed out the negative impact of the pine processionary beetles on the region, as well as the entire country, describing the situation as an epidemic. He called for the application of biological pesticides to combat the spread of these harmful insects.

Participants in the action included representatives from various organizations such as the Denizli-Gemikonağı Development Association, Biologists Association, Green Peace Movement, Gaziverenliler Association, Lefke Tourism Association, as well as political figures like Deputies Salahi Şahiner and Biray Hamzaoğulları from the CTP party.

The event aimed to bring attention to the pressing issue of forest protection and the fight against destructive pests like the pine processionary beetles. It served as a rallying call for collective action to preserve the natural beauty and biodiversity of the country’s forests.
