US Broadband Internet Definition Revised
The US Federal Communications Commission has made a significant change to its definition of “broadband Internet access”. The new definition now requires a minimum download speed of 100 Mbit/s and an upload speed of at least 20 Mbit/s.
This update is crucial as it provides the Federal Communications Commission with specific criteria for evaluating the quality of broadband services and overseeing providers to ensure that Americans receive adequate Internet speeds.
Previously, since 2015, broadband access was officially defined as a connection with a download speed of 25 Mbit/s and an upload speed of 3 Mbit/s. However, FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel advocated for a higher standard, suggesting that the new threshold should be set at 100 Mbps.
This change reflects the increasing demand for faster and more reliable Internet connectivity across the United States. By establishing higher benchmarks for broadband access, the FCC aims to improve the overall quality of Internet services available to consumers.
