US Defense Minister Hegseth Facing Allegations of Downloading Signal App on Office Computer
Pentagon Official Allegedly Used Signal App for Covert Communications
According to a report by The Washington Post, it has been claimed by three individuals with insider information that a Pentagon official, Hegseth, installed the messaging app Signal on a desktop computer in the Ministry of Defense’s Office at the Pentagon.
These sources, who have chosen to remain anonymous, also stated that Hegseth downloaded the Signal app on his personal mobile phone as well.
Hegseth reportedly used the app to communicate and coordinate with senior government officials, including the White House staff, on various matters. While it is uncertain whether other Pentagon officials used the app on their computers, it is clear that Hegseth utilized it for communication purposes.
Furthermore, two unnamed sources alleged that Hegseth attempted to install a program for sending text messages from the office and also installed Signal on a second computer.
The legality of Hegseth and his team’s use of Signal for sensitive communications is currently under scrutiny, as there are laws in the US that regulate the handling of such messages.
In response to these allegations, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell issued a statement confirming that Hegseth never used Signal on his government-issued computer.
Additionally, reports have surfaced that Hegseth shared details of a Yemen operation with various individuals, including his wife, brother, and lawyer, through a Signal group chat.
Notably, journalist Jeffrey Goldberg was inadvertently added to a Signal group chat where war plans in Yemen were being discussed. Goldberg later revealed this information in an article for The Atlantic magazine.
Hegseth has since denied any wrongdoing and criticized the media for sensationalizing the situation, stating that no actual war or attack plans were shared in the Signal conversations.
As the investigation into this matter continues, the use of encrypted messaging apps for official communications within government agencies remains a topic of concern and debate.
