US imposes 27% tariff on Kazakh goods

U.S. President Donald Trump announces new tariffs on imports, including Kazakhstan

In a recent speech at the White House Rose Garden, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 10% minimum tariff on most goods imported to the United States. Higher rates were also announced for dozens of trading partners, including a 27% reciprocal tariff on imports from Kazakhstan. These measures are aimed at addressing trade imbalances and protecting the U.S. economy.

According to Trump, the tariff rates were determined by taking half of what he said those countries had imposed on U.S. exports. A 10% rate on all countries is set to take effect on April 5, with higher reciprocal tariffs coming into effect on April 9. The White House has published a list of countries affected by the new tariffs on social media.

Kazakhstan is among the countries facing higher tariffs, along with India, South Korea, Japan, and Malaysia. China tops the list with a 34% tariff on U.S. goods. Despite this announcement, Kazakhstan’s Trade Ministry reports that 92% of the country’s exports are not subject to additional tariffs. Key products such as oil, uranium, silver, and ferroalloys are exempt from the new measures.

The government of Kazakhstan is initiating consultations with the U.S. to discuss the possibility of removing the new tariffs. As a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Kazakhstan remains committed to open and non-discriminatory trade practices.

In a recent interview, Beata Javorcik, EBRD’s chief economist, noted that Central Asia is less exposed to changes in U.S. trade policy due to limited economic ties with the U.S. However, countries like Hungary and Slovakia, as well as the German economy, could be indirectly affected by the new tariffs imposed by the U.S.

Overall, the new tariffs announced by President Trump have the potential to impact global trade dynamics and economies around the world.
