US Puts Temporary Hold on LNG Export Approvals

The United States Temporarily Suspends Approval Process for LNG Exports

In a recent development, the United States has announced a temporary suspension of the approval process for liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. This decision comes as the current economic and environmental analyses used by the U.S. Department of Energy to confirm LNG export permits are approximately five years old and no longer adequately account for issues such as potential energy cost increases or recent assessments of the impact of greenhouse gas emissions, according to a statement released by the White House.

The Biden administration has stated that it will temporarily suspend pending approvals for LNG exports to countries that do not have a Free Trade Agreement until the Department of Energy updates its basic analyses for these permits. Despite being the world’s number one LNG exporter, with aims to double its LNG exports in the next 10 years, the U.S. assures that this decision will not affect the country’s ability to continue supplying LNG to its allies in the short term. It was also noted that half of the USA’s LNG exports were to Europe last year.

President Biden emphasized the importance of thoroughly examining the effects of LNG exports on energy costs, America’s energy security, and the environment. Additionally, the US Department of Energy announced that it will initiate a process to update the evaluations used in the analysis of additional LNG export permit requests for countries that do not have a Free Trade Agreement.

Importantly, the temporary pause in pending applications will not affect exports that currently have permission, and the decision will not impact the supplies provided by the USA to its allies in Europe and Asia and other buyers that are currently allowed.

However, climate activists have raised concerns that new LNG projects could harm local communities through pollution, increase global dependence on fossil fuels, and lead to emissions from burning gases and leaking the powerful greenhouse gas methane. This move by the Biden administration reflects a commitment to reevaluating the environmental impact and public interest of LNG exports and its long-term effects on both domestic and international markets.
