The US Senate Rejects Proposal to Halt Military Aid to Israel
In a recent vote in the US Senate, independent Senator Sanders, representing Vermont, proposed to cut off military aid to Israel. Sanders argued that the United States should not be complicit in the destruction of the Palestinian people.
Sanders criticized the US for providing $18 billion in military aid to Israel last year, along with over 50,000 tons of military equipment. He specifically condemned Israel’s recent military attack on Gaza, emphasizing the high number of civilian casualties and extensive destruction caused.
Sanders pointed out that Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s government was responsible for the deaths of thousands and injuries of even more in Gaza. He highlighted the breaking of a ceasefire two weeks ago, resulting in the deaths of 322 children and injuring 600 others.
Despite Sanders’ efforts, the vote ultimately resulted in 82 senators rejecting the proposal, while only 15 voted in favor. As a result, the US administration will continue to sell $8.8 billion worth of military equipment to Israel, including over 35,000 bombs and other ammunition.
The decision to uphold military aid to Israel has sparked controversy and renewed debate on US foreign policy in the Middle East. The issue remains a contentious topic among senators and the American public alike.
