US Support Helps Preserve Cultural Heritage and Boost Tourism in Panjakent, Tajikistan

The U.S. Ambassador to Tajikistan, Manuel P. Micaller, Jr., recently visited the Sughd Region of Tajikistan, including the ancient city of Panjakent. During his visit, Ambassador Micaller met with various officials and engaged in discussions about bilateral cooperation, tourism, and development opportunities.

One of the highlights of his trip was a meeting with the Head of the Panjakent district, Abdukholiq Kholiqzoda, where they discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries. Ambassador Micaller also visited the Pedagogical Institute of Panjakent, where he interacted with students participating in the Embassy’s English Access Microscholarship Program.

Additionally, the Ambassador spent time at the American Space Panjakent, where he witnessed English language learning activities, cultural sessions about the United States, and debate clubs. He also enjoyed cultural tourism activities such as visiting the Sarazm UNESCO World Heritage Site and engaging with tour operators in Panjakent.

One of the key moments of the trip was when Ambassador Micaller joined local authorities to celebrate the restoration of the Ancient City of Panjakent, a Silk Road site dating back to the fifth century. In his remarks, the Ambassador expressed his pride in supporting the preservation of this historical site as a symbol of respect for Tajikistan’s rich history and culture.

The trip concluded with a visit to the Rudaki mausoleum and museum, where Ambassador Micaller paid his respects. Throughout his visit, he was impressed by the friendliness and hospitality of the people of Panjakent and had the opportunity to sample the famous Panjakent Osh.
