US Suspends Military Aid to Ukraine Amid Trump-Zelenskiy Disagreement
The White House officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, have confirmed reports that President Trump has decided to halt military aid to Ukraine.
Following a discussion with Ukrainian President Zelenskiy after a tense meeting at the White House, Trump made the decision to suspend all military aid to the country for the time being.
A White House official told CNN, “The President has made it clear that he is focused on peace. We want to ensure that our partners are also committed to this goal. We are pausing our assistance to ensure that any resolution is contributing to the peace process.”
Another official stated that the suspension would apply to all military equipment that has not yet been delivered to Ukraine.
Reports indicate that Trump was expecting an apology from Zelenskiy following their public disagreement on Friday. While some officials believed an apology was necessary, others viewed the decision to suspend aid as a tactic to pressure Ukraine.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in an interview with CNN, emphasized the need for Zelenskiy to apologize for the events of Friday’s meeting. The altercation between Trump and Zelenskiy led to the cancellation of a joint press conference and the failure to sign a key bilateral agreement.
Trump accused Zelenskiy of being “disrespectful to the American people,” while Zelenskiy defended his actions and stated that he had no reason to apologize.
The suspension of military aid comes amidst a strained relationship between the US and Ukraine, with the future of their partnership hanging in the balance.
