Opposition leader in Venezuela expresses gratitude to Trump for support of democracy
In a recent social media post, Maria Corina Machado, a prominent figure in the Venezuelan opposition, expressed her gratitude to former President Donald Trump for his support of opposition presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez.
Machado thanked Trump for his unwavering support in the fight for democracy in Venezuela, stating, “President Trump, the people of Venezuela have shown incredible courage by standing up against fear and brutal oppression. We stand united in rejecting a criminal regime that attempts to hold onto power and avoid accountability. Maduro and his allies will not succeed. We remain steadfast in our quest for freedom and dignity.”
Machado went on to say, “Your timely and resolute concern for my safety has been a turning point. Under the leadership of President-elect Edmundo Gonzalez, Venezuela will emerge stronger, freer, and more united than ever before. It will serve as a beacon of stability and strength for the entire American continent. We are confident that freedom will prevail. Thank you.”
Meanwhile, Nicolas Maduro was sworn in for his third presidential term on July 28, 2024, after winning the election with 52% of the votes. Opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez has alleged that Maduro’s re-election was a result of a coup against the will of the people.
The G7 countries issued a joint statement condemning Maduro’s inauguration, citing a lack of democratic legitimacy. The international community continues to monitor the situation in Venezuela closely as the struggle for democracy and freedom persists.
