Veszprém’s Repositioning Opportunity as European Capital of Culture

Veszprém: A European Capital of Culture Reinventing Itself
Formerly awarded the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture, Veszprém and the Lake Balaton region took advantage of this opportunity to showcase their rich heritage and potential for growth. According to regional development minister Tibor Navracsics, the designation allowed for the region to “reposition” itself on the European cultural map.
Navracsics praised the region for its historical landmarks, natural beauty, and vibrant culture, noting that it was on par with more popular tourist destinations in western Europe. The programme aimed not only to strengthen local communities but also to highlight Hungarian contributions to European culture and vice versa.
Unlike typical infrastructure-focused projects associated with the European Capital of Culture title, Veszprém’s initiatives focused on the sustainable reconstruction of buildings and promoting local creativity. The participation of 116 localities in a co-financing model ensured that every community played a part in the region’s success.
Looking ahead, Navracsics expressed hope that Veszprém would continue to develop as a “creative region,” with a strong emphasis on the creative industries driving its economy. Infrastructure enhancements are also a key aspect of future plans to further enhance the region’s appeal.
