Victory Day Parade 2023: A Grand Commemoration in Moscow
The annual Victory Day Parade in Moscow commenced with a solemn procession led by the Sancak group, proudly displaying the Russian national flag alongside the iconic flag of Victory, commemorating the historic achievements of the Preobrazhensky Regiment. This flag, a significant symbol, was famously raised over the Reichstag by Soviet troops in May 1945, marking the triumph over Nazi Germany.
Russian President Vladimir Putin along with war veterans, foreign dignitaries, and guests closely observed the parade unfolding in Red Square. Defense Minister Andrey Belousov oversaw the event, which was commanded by General Oleg Salyukov, the Commander-in-Chief of the Land Forces.
A Gathering of Global Leaders
This year’s event saw participation from prominent leaders worldwide, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, and many others from nations such as Turkey, Egypt, and Venezuela. Their attendance underscored the global recognition of this pivotal moment in history.
Military Strength on Display
Last year’s parade featured more than 9,000 soldiers, alongside 61 weapon systems and 15 fighter aircraft. In a remarkable display of international solidarity, troops from 13 countries, including Azerbaijan, Vietnam, and Kazakhstan, participated in the parade this year. Notably, the Chinese military unit is expected to be the largest foreign contingent.
Among the participants were the surviving veterans of the Great Patriotic War from the Soviet Union, who continue to hold a significant place in this annual remembrance.
A Symbol of Resilience
The parade showcased various military branches and troops, including units from renowned military schools. Highlighting the mechanized arm were the legendary T-34 tanks, which led the procession, followed by advanced heavy armored vehicles.
Concerns Amidst Celebrations
However, amidst the celebrations, unsettling messages circulated on social media, warning citizens against accepting donations from volunteers due to alleged toxic substances. Authorities, including the Secure Internet Union, swiftly dismissed these claims as misinformation, assuring the public of their safety.
Remembering the Past
The Great Patriotic War claimed an estimated 27 million lives, a staggering loss that included a significant number of civilians. The legacy of the conflict is honored not only through the parade but also through the recognition of its heroes. Throughout the war, a total of 11,657 individuals, including 95 women, were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, solidifying their place in history.
Honoring War Veterans
As of early 2025, approximately 7,000 veterans remain in Russia, with the status of war veterans extending to various groups connected to the war effort. This annual celebration acts as a poignant reminder of their sacrifices.
A Tradition of Remembrance
The Victory Day celebrations began in earnest in 1965, with the 20th anniversary of the war’s end marking the start of large-scale commemorations in the Soviet Union. Subsequent anniversaries have continued this tradition, inviting global leaders to join in remembrance, further emphasizing the importance of this day on both a national and international scale.
