PM Viktor Orbán Makes Memorable Encounter on International Women’s Day
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán made a special gesture on International Women’s Day by distributing flowers to various women, including professional female boxer Luca Hámori. However, it was his encounter with Hámori that stood out the most, particularly due to his comments about Algerian female boxer Imane Khelif.
In a video shared on Facebook, Orbán presented Hámori with a pair of boxing gloves gifted to him by Evander Holyfield, a legendary boxer known for his accomplishments in multiple weight divisions. The gloves also featured a Bible quote from Philippians 4:13, emphasizing the importance of faith and strength.
In return, Hámori gifted Orbán with a pair of boxing gloves, leading to a discussion about women in sports. Orbán highlighted the differences in competition between men and women, referencing Hámori’s match against Algerian boxer Imane Khelif at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Khelif had faced scrutiny for her hormonal levels and biological makeup, with some questioning her eligibility to compete against women.
Despite the controversy surrounding Khelif, she was approved to participate by the International Olympic Committee, eventually defeating Hámori in their match. Geneticist Andrew Village pointed out the significant impact of Khelif’s elevated testosterone levels on her athletic performance, comparing it to “biological doping.”
In addition to Orbán’s Women’s Day gesture, other politicians in Hungary also celebrated the occasion. Róbert Zsigó, a parliamentary state secretary, expressed gratitude to women for their contributions to society. Péter Magyar, leader of the opposition Tisza Party, emphasized the importance of addressing issues affecting Hungarian women as a collective responsibility.
However, there were also criticisms raised by Alexandra Szentkirályi, head of ruling party Fidesz’s Budapest chapter, towards Magyar’s Women’s Day gestures. Szentkirályi accused Magyar of using empty gestures to mask his disrespectful behavior towards women, urging him to show genuine respect and support for women in Hungary.
