Viktória Traub’s Animated Short Film Nominated for Oscars
Hungarian animated short film “Shoes and Hooves” wins Best Animated Film award at Guanajuato International Film Festival in Mexico
Viktória Traub’s animated short film “Shoes and Hooves” has been making waves in the international film festival circuit. The film recently won the Best Animated Film award at the Guanajuato International Film Festival in Mexico, which now makes it eligible to enter the 2025 Oscars in the Best Animated Short Film category.
The film, set in a surreal world populated by human-animal creatures, explores themes of connection, conformity, and self-acceptance. The protagonist, Paula, a centaur-girl working as a pedicurist in a small town, longs to have human feet. When she meets Arnold, the crocodile-man, they fall in love at first sight.
The film raises questions about identity, conformity, and self-abandonment, all portrayed through the medium of 2D animation.
Director Viktória Traub, a graduate of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, has been gaining recognition for her unique storytelling style. Her previous films, “Iron Egg” and “Mermaids and Rhinos,” have also been well-received at international film festivals.
“Shoes and Hooves” premiered at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival and has since been showcased at various festivals worldwide. It will continue to compete in upcoming festivals in Viborg, Denmark, and Ottawa.
The film was produced by Pi Productions with support from the National Film Institute (NFI) and TV Paint, co-produced with Solaz Media and Paprika Studios. Post-production was completed at the NFI Film Lab, with music by Csaba Kalotás, screenplay co-written by Zsuzsanna Bak and Polett Dus, animation sound design by Zoltán Vadon, and produced by Polett Dus.
“Shoes and Hooves” is a testament to the talent and creativity of Hungarian filmmakers, and its success at international film festivals is a testament to the growing recognition of Hungarian cinema on the global stage.
