Warning from Chamber of Meteorological Engineers: Expect More Extreme Temperatures as Nature Destruction Continues

Mustafa Altunç, President of the Chamber of Meteorological Engineers, has warned about the consequences of the extreme hot weather being experienced, stating that it is a clear reflection of the destruction caused to nature. Altunç emphasized that if we continue to harm the environment, we should not be surprised to encounter more frequent weather events such as El Nino and La Nina.

In a written statement, Altunç highlighted that temperatures above seasonal norms occur every 2-7 years, and currently, we are witnessing peak temperature values that deviate significantly from the normal patterns. He also noted the increase in water temperature, particularly in the eastern parts of the Pacific Ocean.

Explaining the phenomenon of El Nino, Altunç stated that it leads to changes in climate for a specific period, resulting in peak temperature values. He also mentioned that El Nino, meaning “Little Boy” in Spanish, is the opposite of La Nina, which translates to “Girl.”

Altunç emphasized the importance of protecting nature to prevent extreme heat and weather events. He shared data indicating the highest air temperatures recorded in the TRNC in the past 30 years, with August reaching 46.6 °C, September 45.8 °C, July 45.3 °C, June 45.0 °C, and May recording 44.2 °C.

Furthermore, Altunç pointed out that the warming of sea water is one of the contributing factors to severe meteorological events like typhoons and hurricanes. It is essential to prioritize environmental conservation to mitigate the impact of such extreme weather occurrences.
