Warnings of Impending Quake in Istanbul: Greek Seismologist Sounds Alarm
Greek seismologist Akis Tselentis has issued a warning following the recent 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Istanbul. Tselentis stated that the earthquake risk in Istanbul is very high and all scientists are expecting a major earthquake to occur in the city. He emphasized the importance of being prepared, as the alarm bells are ringing for Istanbul.
Tselentis also mentioned the seismic activity in the Marmara Sea and its potential impact on the Greek region. He noted that while there is a low probability of Greece being affected, it is crucial to monitor the North Aegean fault line.
Professor Costas Papazachos, an expert in seismology at the University of Aristotle, expressed confidence that the seismic activity in Turkey could also have consequences for Greece. He highlighted the long period without significant earthquake activity in the region, stating that there is a looming “earthquake debt” that needs to be paid.
In response to questions about the potential impact of earthquakes in Turkey on Greece, experts reassured that Istanbul’s earthquakes are unlikely to influence Greece. However, there are concerns about a possible destructive earthquake on the Greek bow, with predictions indicating a magnitude greater than 8.
Costas Synolakis, a Natural Disaster Management Professor, emphasized the need for preparedness and caution, as the risk of a major earthquake in the region remains. He cautioned that the Greek spring may experience an earthquake of significant magnitude, urging authorities and residents to be vigilant and ready for any seismic activity.
