Washington hosts inaugural US Hungarian diaspora conference
The first-ever Hungarian diaspora conference in the United States took place in Washington, DC, alongside an official visit by the state secretary for Hungarian communities abroad. The event, held at the Hungarian Embassy, featured Lőrinc Nacsa discussing the Hungarian government’s goals and support programs for Hungarian communities abroad.
Nacsa emphasized the importance of cooperation among local Hungarian communities and organizations, suggesting that joint celebrations would receive more support from the Hungarian state. He urged leaders of US-Hungarian diaspora groups to help strengthen relations between the US and Hungary, which are currently in a new phase.
Hungary’s ambassador to the US, Szabolcs Takács, expressed his desire for diaspora meetings to become a yearly tradition across the country. He also highlighted his efforts to alleviate red tape affecting Hungarians in America, including former entry restrictions and visa challenges faced by Korosi Csoma scholarship holders dedicated to empowering local Hungarian communities.
Leaders from diaspora communities in Florida, Georgia, California, Cleveland, and Chicago attended the conference in Washington, showcasing the diversity and unity of Hungarian expatriates in the US. This gathering marks a significant step in fostering connections and support for Hungarian communities abroad.
