We Demand Exemplary Punishment for Those Responsible: BRTK

Trial for Izmir Flood Disaster Victims to Begin Tomorrow
The first trial for Turkish Cypriot Özge Ceren Abi, one of the two individuals who tragically lost their lives due to electrocution in the flood disaster that struck Izmir on July 12, 2024, is scheduled to commence tomorrow at the Izmir Courthouse.
Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı, representing the government, made a trip to Izmir to attend the case. He met with Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor Fahri Mutlu Tosun, who provided insights into the case.
Based on information from the Ministry, Arıklı revealed that the incident stemmed from a series of negligence, resulting in the untimely deaths of two young women. He highlighted that infrastructure cable laying work was conducted by GEDİZ AŞ at the site of the incident in 2015, where the cable was improperly positioned only 45-36 cm below the ground’s surface instead of the recommended 80-60 cm. Numerous electric shocks were reported at the location over the years, with complaints being lodged to the Municipality and Gediz Electricity Institution. Despite warning signs, no action was taken, leading to a tragic outcome.
Arıklı disclosed, “Currently, 42 individuals are facing prosecution, with 13 in custody and 2 on the run.” He recounted the events leading up to the electrocution of Özge Ceren Abi on January 9, 2024, stressing the lack of a concrete solution despite interventions by İZSU and GEDİZ Electric, ultimately resulting in the loss of her life.
Expressing gratitude to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office for their diligent efforts, Arıklı emphasized the government’s commitment to pursuing justice and ensuring that those responsible receive exemplary punishment. The case is being closely monitored, with a focus on delivering justice for the victims of the Izmir flood disaster.
