WhatsApp’s New Meta AI Feature Raises Privacy Concerns
The latest update on WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that allows users to interact with an artificial intelligence-powered chat robot. The addition of a blue circle-shaped Meta AI icon on the chat screen has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with many users expressing concerns over their privacy.
In a statement to the BBC, WhatsApp stated, “We believe in providing options to our users and we value their feedback.” The company compared the meta AI feature to other permanent functions like ‘channels’ and ‘status’ on the platform.
The Meta AI feature is not exclusive to WhatsApp; it is also available on Instagram and Facebook Messenger under the meta umbrella. The AI robot works with Meta’s language model known as Llama 4. A search bar with the phrase “Ask Meta AI or Call” has been added to the chat screen, but this feature is currently only available in select countries.
While WhatsApp assures users that conversations with the AI are limited to shared messages and are protected by end-to-end encryption, privacy experts remain cautious. Kris Shrishak, an expert in AI and privacy, warned against Meta’s use of user data and suggested that users should not be compelled to use AI services.
A recent study by The Atlantic revealed that Meta may be using pirated books and academic articles from the Libgen platform to educate its AI models, prompting backlash from authors. Despite the controversy, Meta has yet to comment on The Atlantic’s claims, and cases filed by some writers against the company are ongoing.
The United Kingdom’s Information Commissioner Office has expressed concerns over the use of personal data to enhance AI systems, emphasizing the need for strict measures, especially when it comes to processing children’s data. As the debate over privacy and AI continues, users are urged to remain vigilant about their online interactions and data sharing practices.
