Why Cardinals Might Choose Hungarian Péter Erdő as the Next Pope: Insights from an Expert

Cardinal Péter Erdő’s Prospects in the Upcoming Papal Conclave
As the Catholic Church prepares for its next papal conclave, discussions are heating up regarding the potential candidates, with Hungarian Cardinal Péter Erdő emerging as a notable contender. Insights from former Hungarian diplomat Aurél Érkel and reactions from Prime Minister Viktor Orbán shed light on Erdő’s chances.
Will the Cardinals Choose Cardinal Erdő?
According to Érkel, the cardinals will prioritize assessing the current state of the Church as they deliberate on their choices for the next pope. They are expected to elect a leader capable of addressing contemporary challenges, with key factors including the candidate’s age, organizational skills, contemplative prayer life, theological expertise, and commitment to continuing the legacy of Pope Francis. Cultural background, while secondary, may also play a role.
The voting process requires a supermajority, and once a candidate achieves this threshold and accepts the position, he officially becomes the pope and head of state for the Vatican.
Cardinal Erdő consistently ranks high in predictions for possible papal candidates, often appearing in the top five or six spots. Érkel notes that Erdő is among the most experienced and recognized cardinals, valued for his leadership roles, including his tenure as the former head of the Council of Bishops’ Conferences of Europe (CCEE). His involvement in significant events like the International Eucharistic Congress and his expertise in canon law further bolster his candidacy.
Italian media outlets speculate that if elected, Erdő might choose the papal name John Paul III in honor of Pope John Paul II, who appointed him as a cardinal.

Prime Minister Orbán Weighs In
When asked about Cardinal Erdő’s chances in the conclave, PM Orbán refrained from speculation but expressed strong support for him. He emphasized the significant gratitude Hungary owes to both the Catholic Church and Cardinal Erdő for his contributions, highlighting Erdő’s exceptional intellect.
The Voting Landscape
Currently, 252 cardinals exist, but only 135 are eligible to vote in the conclave due to age restrictions. Among the voting members, 53 hail from Europe, with Italy contributing the most at 17. The conclave is poised to commence a few days following the papal funeral.
As the Church moves toward this vital event, Cardinal Péter Erdő’s qualifications and support may position him well for consideration as the next pope in an increasingly complex and evolving religious landscape.
