Why Viktor Orbán Refuses to Join the Euro
Hungary Today reported on Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s recent remarks at the Lámfalussy conference in Budapest, where he emphasized that Hungary is not isolated, but rather it is the European Union that is isolated. Orbán stated that while Hungary is walking on the main street of history, the EU is stumbling somewhere in the muddy backstreets.
The Lámfalussy program, organized by the Hungarian Central Bank (MNB) for the tenth time this year, pays tribute to Sándor Lámfalussy, considered the father of the euro currency. Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), highlighted the importance of the euro in combatting inflation and acknowledged the centralizing of monetary policy as a means to ensure economic stability and predictability.
In his speech, Jeffrey D. Sachs, a professor of economics at Columbia University, praised Orbán for his insight into the global political landscape and the importance of peaceful negotiations in resolving conflicts. Sachs emphasized the need for the US to exercise restraint and prioritize peace with other nations.
Orbán also touched on the significance of the euro currency and the challenges of a common monetary policy without a common fiscal operation. He noted that the euro has benefitted strong economies but has not necessarily supported emerging markets like Hungary. The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of national sovereignty and building relationships with key global players for Hungary’s future prosperity.
Orbán emphasized the role of the middle class in shaping the future world, noting Hungary’s economic growth and stability in recent years. He pointed out the increase in employment and household wealth in the country, positioning Hungary positively within the EU.
