Widespread Flooding Devastates Thailand with 20,000 Homes Impacted
Floods Wreak Havoc in Southern Thailand
The monsoon rains in southern areas of Thailand have caused wide-scale flooding, bringing life to a standstill in many regions. The heavy rainfall led to rivers overflowing, damaging numerous settlements and agricultural areas. As a result, efforts have been made to carry out evacuations and provide aid to those affected. Both boats and an emergency disaster center were utilized to help the people of Yala and Narathiwat provinces evacuate their homes.
In a statement issued by the Department of Disaster Prevention (DDPM), it was disclosed that a total of 19,624 houses in 24 districts and 384 villages in 5 states were impacted by the flood. Additionally, it was warned that the rains were expected to continue for the next two days, prompting citizens to prepare for possible evacuation.
Prime Minister Thavisin also made a visit to the flood-affected areas, cutting short her other engagements to receive updates on the situation in Narathiwat province. She later visited the emergency disaster center and met with evacuated citizens.
After the visit, Prime Minister Thavisin expressed, “A total of 19,624 households have been affected by the flood in 5 provinces in southern Thailand: Satun, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. The unusual volume of precipitation in the region, due to the combination of monsoon rains and low air pressure, has caused immense suffering for the citizens. We are committed to alleviating their difficulties and urge all sectors to come forward and assist the public. I encourage all authorities to take action in disaster relief efforts and providing crucial information to the public.”
Moreover, the monsoon rains have also had an adverse impact on maritime transportation, leading to at least 7 maritime accidents in the south of Thailand. As a result, maritime traffic has faced disruptions and security measures on public beaches have been strengthened to ensure public safety.
