Winning Winemakers: Tokaj and Eger Dominate Prestigious Wine Grand Prix
The 2024 Hungarian Wine Grand Prix has announced the winners in both the white and red wine categories. The top spot in the white wine category was awarded to the 2021 Csontos furmint from Bott Winery in Tokaj, while the 2019 Agapé Nagy-Eged-hegy grand superior Egri Bikavér (‘Bull’s Blood’) from St. Andrea Vineyard and Winery in Eger took home the prize in the red wine category. Additionally, the Kovács Nimród Winery from Eger was honored with the Dr. József Kosárka Memorial Award.
The Hungarian Wine Writers’ Circle (MBK) selects 12 white and 12 red wines each year, with blind tastings conducted by members of the MBK to determine the winners of the Hungarian Wine Grand Prix. This year, the judges favored wines from the Pannon and Balaton wine regions, followed by the Upper Pannonian and Tokaj regions.
The MBK members also awarded the 2024 Memorial Award in memory of József Kosárka to Kovács Nimród Winery from Eger. This marks the third time a winery from Eger has received this prestigious prize.
The award ceremony will take place at the Mercure Hotel in Székesfehérvár, where the public will have the opportunity to taste the winning wines at a masterclass event. Judit Bott from Bott Winery and György Lőrincz from St. Andrea Vineyard and Winery will be on hand to present their award-winning wines.
Overall, these awards highlight the exceptional quality and variety of Hungarian wines, showcasing the talents of winemakers from different regions across the country.
