Winter Emotions of Przewalski’s Horses in Kazakhstan

Przewalski’s Horses Thriving in Winter in Kazakhstan’s Torgai Steppes

Despite the cold temperatures and snow, Przewalski’s horses, also known as Kerkulan and Kertagy in ancient Kazakh names, are thriving in their native lands during winter in the Torgai Steppes of the Kostanai Region. According to a report by Kazinform on Jan. 21, these magnificent creatures are feeling great in their natural habitat.

Rustam Bidibayev, the chief specialist of the wildlife and hunting department at the Kostanai regional forestry and wildlife inspection, confirmed that the horses are in excellent condition. Their weight has increased, and their fur has thickened compared to the autumn season.

“Currently, the snow cover in Torgai is around 7-10 centimeters. The horses are quietly foraging for food, but caretakers regularly provide hay. Our horses come from a zoo, not the wild, so they are monitored around the clock by caretakers who live on-site and work in shifts. Kerkulans are well taken care of,” explained Bidibayev.

Updates on potential pregnancies are expected closer to spring or summer when new offspring may arrive. Due to the horses’ weight and appearance transformations during winter, it is challenging to confirm any pregnancies at this time.

Last June, Kazakhstan initiated the reintroduction of Przewalski’s horses with the goal of bringing around 40 of these majestic animals over the next five years. The conservation efforts aim to increase the population of these endangered species and preserve their unique genetic heritage.

The resilience and adaptability of Przewalski’s horses in the harsh winter conditions of the Torgai Steppes highlight the importance of preserving and protecting these iconic creatures in their natural habitat.
