Brave Swimmers Take Traditional New Year’s Day Splash in Lake Balaton
On New Year’s Day, brave swimmers gathered at Hungary’s most popular vacation spot, Lake Balaton, to take part in a traditional splash despite the cold winter weather. The event, known as the New Year’s Splash, involves swimmers racing to retrieve a Christmas tree that has been placed in the icy waters of the lake.
Participants of all ages can sign up for the splash, but only those who have been cleared by a doctor on site are allowed to take a dip in the freezing Lake Balaton. The entry to the event is free of charge, and heated tents are provided for swimmers to warm up after their swim. Guests can enjoy a variety of hot drinks and traditional Hungarian dishes like goulash soup, lángos, and chimney cakes from local caterers. Live music adds to the festive atmosphere of the event.
The Christmas tree was placed in the lake on Christmas Eve during a small ceremony. While this event was quieter, it could still be enjoyed by spectators from the shore with a cup of hot drink in hand.
The New Year’s Splash in Lake Balaton is a unique way for locals and tourists alike to celebrate the beginning of the new year and embrace the winter season in Hungary’s most iconic vacation spot.
