Ballistic Missile Launch from Yemen Triggers Flight Suspensions at Ben Gurion Airport
On Sunday morning, a ballistic missile fired from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen struck near Ben Gurion Airport in Israel, causing a significant security alert. This incident led numerous international airlines, including Hungary’s Wizz Air, to suspend flights to Tel Aviv due to safety concerns.
The missile landed around 9:30 AM local time in an orchard adjacent to Terminal 3 of Ben Gurion Airport, close to Tel Aviv. Air raid sirens were activated in central Israel just moments before the impact. Reports indicate that the explosion created a substantial crater and scattered shrapnel across nearby roads, some of which were temporarily closed following the blast.
Israeli authorities confirmed that six individuals sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident. While the extent of property damage has yet to be fully evaluated, the missile strike temporarily disrupted airport operations, halting flight activity for approximately an hour before services gradually resumed.
Airlines Respond to Security Threat
In the aftermath of the missile strike, many airlines decided to suspend their flights to Tel Aviv as a precautionary measure. Notably, major carriers such as Austrian Airlines, Air France, Ryanair, Azerbaijan Airlines, Air Europa, and Delta Air Lines canceled all flights to Israel. Additionally, Transavia and Iberia Airlines announced a two-day suspension of services, while Wizz Air, Lufthansa, Swiss, Air India, and ITA Airways extended their cancellations for a minimum of three days. British Airways has also paused flights until Wednesday.
Wizz Air, which has a significant operational presence in the route between Europe and Israel, joined several other major airlines, including United Airlines and Delta, in halting services until further notice.
