May 1st, also known as Labor Day, was marked with a joint event in the buffer zone in Nicosia, where unions and organizations from both sides of the island gathered under the slogan “Workers Shoulder to Shoulder for Peace and Social Justice”.
The event, organized by PEO from the South and supported by various unions and organizations from the North, aimed to send a message of solidarity and common struggle for peace and social justice. Participants also expressed their support for the Palestinian people during the event.
Gathering at Kuğulu Park in the North, participants marched towards the Çetinkaya (Taksim) Field where they met with Greek Cypriot participants. Banners with messages advocating for labor rights, peace, and freedom were carried during the march, accompanied by chants of “Long Live May 1”.
Prominent figures such as Second President Mehmet Ali Talat, CTP Chairman Tufan Erhürman, and Nicosia Turkish Municipality Mayor Mehmet Harmancı were among the attendees. The joint statement for May 1 was read bilingually during the event, followed by a concert by two acclaimed artists.
