Worry over consecutive earthquakes in Italy

A series of earthquakes in Campi Flegrei, Italy, caused concern among the residents of the region, as reported in the Italian press. Approximately 160 large and small earthquakes rattled the area between 7:51 PM and 11:00 PM yesterday evening, with the largest earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale. This was noted as the most severe earthquake recorded in the region in the last 40 years.

Thankfully, there were no casualties or significant property damage reported as a result of the earthquakes. However, some buildings did sustain cracks and facade pieces fell off in some areas.

As a precautionary measure, education in primary and secondary schools in the epicenter of the earthquakes, Pozzuoli, was temporarily halted today. Additionally, 18 apartment buildings were evacuated, and the women’s prison in Pozzuoli was also evacuated with 140 prisoners being transferred to other facilities.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is set to convene an emergency meeting with relevant ministers and officials tomorrow to discuss the situation. Minister of Civil Defense Nello Musumeci will also be present at the meeting to assess the current interventions in place and discuss potential additional measures for the region.

It is worth noting that the Meloni government had updated its emergency plans for mass evacuation of Campi Flegrei just last year in response to potential seismic activity in the area. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary steps to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents in the region.
