Writer Funda Demirci’s Shocking Defense: ‘Arrange Me a Plane Ticket’
The trial of writer Funda Demirci, who is accused of stabbing her ex-husband Mustafa Çapar to death in the throat on September 28, 2023 in Beşiktaş, has officially begun. The defendant, Funda Demirci, along with the lawyers of both parties, attended the hearing at the Istanbul 38th High Criminal Court. The lawyer of the Ministry of Family and Social Services and the family of the deceased, Mustafa Çapar, were present at the hearing as “complainants.”
During the hearing, defendant Demirci, when asked to make a defense, responded with a simple, “I did not do it.” The presiding judge then confronted Demirci with his previous statement where he expressed regret for taking away a person’s right to life, to which Demirci denied making such a statement.
The presiding judge pressed the defendant for more information about the incident, to which Demirci claimed there was constant violence and denied remembering anything about a knife being involved.
The defendant’s lawyer requested a report from the Forensic Medicine Institution regarding Demirci’s mental health, stating that she was not in a condition to provide a statement.
Meanwhile, the complainant Hasan Çapar made a strong statement at the hearing, accusing Demirci of carrying out the incident like an assassination and demanded the harshest punishment for her.
The court, after hearing arguments from both sides, decided to request a report on the defendant’s criminal capacity from the Forensic Medicine Institution and to continue her detention. The hearing was adjourned for further proceedings.
In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, it was revealed that the victim, Mustafa Çapar, was stabbed to death by his ex-wife, Funda Demirci. Statements from the victim’s son and a security guard on the scene painted a gruesome picture of the events leading up to the incident.
The indictment also mentioned emails and voice recordings sent by the suspect, indicating hatred towards her ex-husband before the murder. The prosecution requested aggravated life imprisonment for Funda Demirci for the deliberate killing of her ex-husband.
The trial will continue as more evidence is gathered and presented in the courtroom.
