YÖK Report Reveals Investigation into Ekrem İmamoğlu’s Diploma

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) President Ekrem İmamoğlu is facing allegations of falsifying his university diploma, an official document, according to an investigation opened by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). A report prepared by the Dean of Istanbul University Faculty of Business Administration found that the horizontal transfer, announcements periods, and transfer transactions were not carried out in accordance with the decisions of the Council of Higher Education.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office is continuing its investigation into the allegations regarding Imamoglu’s undergraduate diploma. Details from the report prepared by YÖK have been sent to the prosecutor’s office for further review.
The report reveals that when Imamoglu transferred to University College of Northem Cyprus (UCNC) Business Management in Cyprus, he received 2 years of training from the English program. The report also states that the recognition of UCNC in 1990 was not known by YÖK at the time, raising questions about the legitimacy of the transfer.
Furthermore, the report highlights discrepancies in the transfer procedures, pointing out that decisions were not aligned with the guidelines set by the Council of Higher Education. The report also mentions that only the Eastern Mediterranean University in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is recognized by the Higher Education Presidency, casting doubt on the legitimacy of Imamoglu’s transfer.
In addition, the report lists 55 students who were part of the transfer process, indicating that certain quotas and procedures were not followed as required. It raises concerns about the handling of applications and decisions related to the transfer process.
The investigation into the allegations of a fake diploma is ongoing, and further developments are expected as authorities delve deeper into the matter. The implications of these findings could have significant consequences for Imamoglu and his position as the President of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
