Yugoslav Partisans’ Massacre: Commemorating the Murder of Tens of Thousands of Hungarians

Commemoration Held in Serbia to Honor Hungarian Massacre Victims
A commemoration event took place in the village of Curug (Csúrog), located in the northern part of Serbia, on Sunday to honor the Hungarians who were massacred by Yugoslav partisans in Vojvodina during 1944-45.
The Vojvodina Hungarian National Council, led by Árpád Fremond, emphasized the importance of remembering the innocent victims who lost their lives unarmed. The goal of such commemorations is to prevent similar tragic events from occurring in the future.
Júlia Teleki, a survivor of the massacre, expressed that the remembrance of these events had been forbidden for a significant period of time. The tragic incident resulted in the deaths of at least 20,000 Hungarians in Curug and nearby settlements.
In 2013, a memorial dedicated to the victims was established in Curug, with the presence of the then Hungarian President, János Áder, and his Serbian counterpart, Tomislav Nikolic.
It was not until 2014, seventy years after the massacre, that Serbia’s government revoked a resolution that held the residents of Curug, Mosorin (Mozsor), and Zabalj (Zsablya) collectively guilty for the tragic event.
The commemoration event serves as a reminder of the atrocities committed during that time and the importance of acknowledging and honoring the victims.
