Zelensky Criticizes Orbán Over EU Accession Delays
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly expressed his discontent with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s stance on Ukraine’s EU membership aspirations. In a recent conversation with journalists, Zelensky emphasized that while Ukraine respects Hungary’s internal matters, Orbán’s actions threaten to obstruct Ukraine’s path to the European Union.
Zelensky remarked, "Just don’t drag us into your elections. He [Orbán] is actively blocking our accession to the EU. This strategy will ultimately fail because the people here still support Ukraine.” His comments reference recent surveys indicating substantial support among Hungarians for Ukraine’s EU integration.
Orbán has maintained a dual approach, offering long-term support for Ukraine’s EU membership while steadfastly opposing any effort for a speedy accession, labeling it "impossible." He argues that hastening Ukraine’s entry could jeopardize Hungary’s economic interests, prompting Zelensky’s critical response.
In expressing his frustration, Zelensky pointed out the delicate balance of respecting sovereign decisions. “He may oppose it, but he has no right to impede our accession, as it is ultimately a choice for another nation. Just as we must not interfere in Hungary’s fate,” he asserted.
The political landscape further complicates matters; Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjártó, stated that all Hungarians should have a voice in deliberations surrounding Ukraine’s EU application. He emphasized that Ukraine seeks membership in a bloc that Hungary is already a part of, suggesting a need for Kiev to adjust its approach.
Moreover, the opposition Tisza Party, led by MEP Péter Magyar, has vocalized its resistance to fast-tracking Ukraine’s EU accession, highlighting a cautious stance that echoes broader concerns related to Ukraine’s ongoing conflict and its readiness for membership.
As tensions between Kyiv and Budapest mount, both sides appear to be at an impasse, with Ukraine’s quest for EU accession becoming enmeshed in Hungary’s internal political dynamics and nationalist rhetoric.
