Zonguldak Bounces Back After Devastating Flood: Life Returns to Normal

Clean-up Efforts Underway in Zonguldak after Devastating Flood

Zonguldak’s Devrek district is slowly recovering from the recent flooding that occurred on July 9, leaving the streets and avenues filled with mud and rubble. The local municipality, along with various institutions, organizations, and volunteers, have joined forces to clean up the affected areas.

In Karşıyaka Neighborhood, AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Authority), as well as other responders, have been diligently working to restore normalcy by cleaning up workplaces that were impacted by the flood. Thanks to their efforts, some businesses have been able to reopen their doors.

One key landmark in the area is the Bük Bridge, which is essential for transportation to the villages in Çaydeğirmeni town. After being thoroughly cleaned, the bridge is now open for vehicle passage, easing the accessibility for the local community.

In addition to the physical clean-up, the Turkish Red Crescent has been offering support to affected citizens. Using their vehicles, they have been providing tea, water, and soup to those in need.

However, one ongoing challenge in the area is the shortage of drinking water. To address this issue, trucks have been transporting water from Düzce to Zonguldak, ensuring that the residents have access to clean and safe drinking water.

Local tradesmen are optimistic about the recovery process, despite the challenges they face. Devrim Ulukoz, one of the tradesmen, acknowledged the municipality’s efforts and expressed confidence that the situation would improve. He noted, “There are many problems under the houses. It is quite troublesome because there are basements. But it will be fixed.”

Another tradesman, Erkan Baştoğ, shared the difficulties he encountered during the flood, recounting how he saved his brother from the rising waters in their basement. He also mentioned the impact on their business, stating, “Our production has stopped now. The machines are in the water.” Despite this setback, the tradesmen remain resilient and are determined to recover.

As the clean-up efforts continue, the people of Zonguldak are hopeful that life will soon return to normal. The coordinated response from the municipality, organizations, and volunteers is providing much-needed support to the affected communities, instilling optimism for a brighter future.
