100 Years of Mosfilm: A Celebration
Mosfilm Film Studio Celebrates 100th Anniversary
Today marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Mosfilm film studio, one of the largest and most equipped film studios in Europe. Established in 1920, the studio has been the birthplace of numerous beloved films that have remained relevant for a century.
The studio’s birthday is considered to be the release of the film “On the Wings of Heaven” directed by Boris Mikhin in 1924. Though at the time, the film studio was just a pavilion. It was only three years later in 1927 that it began to form on Vorobyovy Gory.
Now, Mosfilm encompasses an area of 30 hectares and houses 17 covered pavilions, two open-air film sets, a sound studio, a costume and props house, a car park, Mosfilmofond, a cinema and concert complex, administrative buildings, and a park area. The studio also boasts toponyms such as Leonid Gaidai, Sergei Bondarchuk, and Isaac Dunaevsky Squares, as well as the Alley of Great Masters.
Mosfilm has been the set for many iconic paintings, with about 70% of film material shot in the studio. The territory of the pavilions is so vast that entire cities can be built within them. The studio also boasts a wide variety of costumes, props, and even its own greenhouse where plants are grown for use in films.
In addition to its illustrious film history, Mosfilm includes its own TV channel, Mosfilm TV, which launched in 2005. The channel showcases classic Soviet films of various genres and is available on most cable and satellite networks in Russia and the CIS countries.
Over the past 100 years, Mosfilm has produced over 2,500 films, including popular titles such as “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears,” “Irony of Fate,” “White Sun of the Desert,” “Office Romance,” “Love and Doves,” and “War and Peace.”
To commemorate this historic milestone, a number of events have been planned at the studio, celebrating its rich history and the countless cinematic masterpieces it has brought to the world. Congratulations to Mosfilm on its 100th anniversary!
