November Brings Closing of Tax Payment Period in Turkey

As November comes to an end, so does another period of tax payments in Turkey. Owners of various properties such as houses, workplaces, shops, land, automobiles, trucks, minivans, pickups, tow trucks, caravans, helicopters, and airplanes are required to pay Real Estate Tax and additional Motor Vehicle Tax (MTV). Failure to make the required payments will result in accruing interest.

In some cases, exemptions from MTV and Property Tax may be possible.

There are currently 28 million registered vehicles and 23 million households and workplaces in Turkey. Vehicle, residential, and business owners are required to pay certain taxes each year. Vehicle owners pay Motor Vehicle Tax in January and July, while residential and business owners are obligated to pay Property Tax in May and November.

The recent regulation brought about an additional installment payment for MTV for vehicle owners, to be paid from September to November. This applies to owners of automobiles, off-road vehicles, motorcycles, minibuses, panel vans, motorhomes, buses, pickup trucks, trucks, tractors, airplanes, and helicopters, with the deadline for payment being November 30, 2023.

Every citizen who owns real estate in Turkey is required to pay property tax twice a year, in May and November. The deadline for the November payment is November 30, 2023.

Individuals who may be exempt from property taxes, such as retirees, disabled people, veterans, and martyrs’ families, must submit specific documents to the relevant municipalities.

People who own residences that do not exceed 200 square meters and have no income, as well as consulates of foreign countries, state-owned institutions or lands, dams, religious, and military buildings, may also be exempt from property tax.

Those owning vehicles with a disability rate of 90 percent and above can be exempt from motor vehicle tax. However, disabled individuals with a disability rate of less than 90 percent must rearrange the interior of their vehicles with special devices and equipment to qualify for the exemption.

Property taxes can be paid by card to relevant municipalities’ cash desks, bank accounts, or websites, while MTV payments can be made by card to tax offices, banks, and the digital tax office.

Failure to make tax payments will result in accruing interest, with the current overdue interest rate standing at 3.5 percent.
