Uzbekistan Welcomes 2.6 Million Foreign Tourists in the First Quarter of 2023
Uzbekistan has emerged as a popular tourist destination, as 2.6 million foreign nationals visited the country between January and March 2023. The majority of these visitors, 2.2 million, came to visit their relatives, while 274.1 thousand opted for recreational tourism. Other purposes of visit included business, medical treatment, trade, and study.
According to the Statistics Agency of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyz Republic were the top three countries whose citizens visited the country the most. A total of 797.8 thousand visitors from Tajikistan, 656.5 thousand from Kazakhstan, and 649.5 thousand from Kyrgyz Republic arrived in Uzbekistan during the period. Other significant sources of tourists included Russia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, South Korea, India, China, and Germany.
Uzbekistan offers a unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty that attracts tourists from around the world. The country has taken several steps to improve its tourism infrastructure, including visa liberalization, a simplified visa application process, and the launch of low-cost airlines. In addition, Uzbekistan has also focused on promoting its cultural heritage sites such as the ancient Silk Road cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva, which have recently been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The tourism sector has become an essential contributor to the Uzbek economy, generating significant employment opportunities and fueling economic growth. With a growing number of visitors from around the world, Uzbekistan is well on its way to becoming a popular global tourism destination.
