200 Earthquakes Hit Greece, Government Calls Emergency Meeting

AFAD reports 4.5 magnitude earthquake in the Aegean Sea

The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) has reported a 4.5-magnitude earthquake in the central base of the Aegean Sea at 20.41, according to information on their website. This comes after a series of earthquakes have been recorded in the area over the last 48 hours, with more than 200 tremors being reported.

The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 10.45 kilometers, has raised concerns about seismic activity in the region, particularly around Greece’s Santorini Island. Santorini, known for its volcanic activity, has been experiencing increased volcanic activities recently.

Despite the heightened seismic activity, authorities have stated that the earthquakes are unrelated to the volcano in Santorini. Nevertheless, the Emergency Committee, under the leadership of Prime Minister Micotakis, has been convened, leading to the closure of schools on four islands and the cancellation of events.

A rescue team has been deployed to the region, with a drone operator team and rescue helicopter on standby in Santorini. Mobile health units have also been set up on Santorini, Amorgos, and Los islands to provide medical assistance as needed.

With the region on high alert following the recent earthquake, authorities are monitoring the situation closely and taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of residents and visitors in the affected areas.
