Turkish Cypriot Footballer Mete Adanır to be Commemorated on the 35th Anniversary of His Death

Mete Adanır, a talented Turkish Cypriot football player who tragically died in a traffic accident while playing football in Turkey, will be commemorated on the 35th anniversary of his death.

According to a statement from the Mete Adanır Foundation, a commemoration event will take place at his grave in the Nicosia Cemetery at 10.30 on Saturday.

Adanır passed away at the age of 27 in a traffic accident near Havza on January 20, 1989, while traveling from Samsun to Malatya.

Born in Limassol on November 4, 1961, Adanır was involved in athletics and football from a young age. He played in the Cyprus 1st League as a licensed football player during his high school years and later took part in the A-Team of the Doğan Turkish Union. Adanır’s football career also took him to England, where he was selected for the junior squad of the Orient team in London and signed a professional agreement with Orient in 1980.

However, Adanır’s professional agreement was later canceled due to complications with his citizenship status, and he continued his football career in Turkey. Notably, he became the top scorer in the Turkish 2nd League in the 1985-1986 season, scoring 25 goals for Konya Spor.

Tragically, Adanır’s life was cut short when he died in a traffic accident at the age of 27, just before he was set to join clubs such as Beşiktaş and Galatasaray.

The commemoration event on the 35th anniversary of his death will be an opportunity for fans, friends, and family to pay their respects to the talented footballer and remember his contributions to the sport.
