Bishkek – The construction of key facilities for the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway has officially commenced. According to a report from the project office of the Strategy for the Development of International Digital Corridors under Uzbekistan Railways JSC, this significant infrastructure project is now underway.
On April 29, officials from Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan jointly launched the construction of three major tunnels in the Jalal-Abad region. These tunnels are as follows:
- Tunnel No. 1: Naryn (Dzhaman-Davan) – 12.5 kilometers long
- Tunnel No. 2: Koshtoba (Kazarman) – 13.2 kilometers long
- Tunnel No. 3: Fergana (Suzak district) – 12.2 kilometers long
The China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway will span a total of 532.53 kilometers, with significant portions running through the territories of China and Kyrgyzstan. Specifically, 158.04 kilometers will traverse the People’s Republic of China (from Kashgar to Torugart), while 304.94 kilometers will be located within Kyrgyzstan. This section will include 167.54 kilometers with a standard track gauge of 1,435 millimeters, and 138.77 kilometers with a broader gauge of 1,520 millimeters.
Furthermore, the railway project plans to include the construction of 20 railway stations—two of which will be promising future terminals—comprising 2 border stations, 1 reloading station, 4 intermediate stations, and 13 sidings.
In total, the project will see the construction of 48 bridges, totaling approximately 16 kilometers, and 27 tunnels, with a collective length of about 103 kilometers. This brings the overall length of bridges and tunnels involved in the project to nearly 120 kilometers.
An agreement between China, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan was signed on June 6, 2024, to facilitate the implementation of this ambitious railway project, with construction officially beginning in October 2024.
As the region invests in its connectivity and infrastructure, the completion of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway is expected to enhance trade and boost economic ties among the participating nations.
