500-Year-Old Historical Treasure Found at Gesi Vineyards

The ancient tradition of using pigeons for fertilizer in vineyards and gardens is being kept alive in the Melikgazi District Gesi neighborhood. Around 500 tower-type pigeons have been maintained by members of the Gesi Bağları Culture and Solidarity Association, ensuring the preservation of this cultural heritage.

Abbas Yağcı, President of the Association, emphasized the importance of feeding and restoring the pigeons in the region. Despite efforts to protect these pigeons, there is still a risk of extinction due to neglect and lack of restoration work.

Pigeon manure, rich in nutrients, has been traditionally used in agriculture. However, the lack of restoration and maintenance of these structures has put the pigeons at risk. The association is calling on local authorities, such as the Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality and Melikgazi Municipality, to intervene and support the restoration efforts.

Zeynep Cesur, an 8-year-old who participates in feeding the pigeons with her father, shared her joy in taking part in this activity. She expressed her happiness in feeding the birds and emphasized the importance of preserving this tradition for future generations to enjoy.

The Gesi vineyards are not just a historical treasure but also a symbol of cultural heritage that needs to be protected and restored for future generations. It is crucial for local authorities and communities to work together to ensure the survival of these pigeons and the preservation of this ancient tradition.
