Turmoil in Istanbul as Police Clash with Protesters
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office is currently investigating corruption and terrorism within the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), with a particular focus on a group gathering near the Red Crescent.
Tensions escalated when a group attempted to break through police barricades at the intersection of Atatürk Boulevard and Constitutional Monarchy Street, leading to a confrontation with law enforcement. Despite repeated warnings from the police, the group refused to disperse and resorted to violence by throwing fireworks, stones, glass bottles, and even chairs. As a result, five police officers sustained injuries during the clash.
Authorities have reported that provocateurs were among the protesters, inciting violence and targeting the police. In response, 66 individuals have been detained in connection with the unrest. Despite attempts by the group to regather on side streets, police teams were quick to intervene and prevent further escalation of the situation.
The clash between protesters and law enforcement highlights the ongoing tensions in Istanbul, as authorities work to maintain order and address potential threats to public safety.
