April Battles Anniversary: Azerbaijan and Armenia Remembering Nine Years Later
Today marks the anniversary of the April battles between Azerbaijan and Armenia, a historic event that ended with the victory of the Azerbaijani Army. It has been nine years since the beginning of these battles, which had a significant impact on the region.
The conflict escalated in mid-March 2016 when the Armenians started violating the ceasefire agreement. From the night of April 1-2, the Azerbaijani Army’s positions and settlements along the entire frontline were continuously attacked by the enemy. This led to armed provocations on the line of contact between the troops from April 2 to April 5, with attacks targeting the civilian population as well. Tragically, Azerbaijani Army servicemen lost their lives, and there were casualties among civilians.
In response, the Azerbaijani Army launched a rapid counterattack, liberating over 2,000 hectares of territory and gaining operational control of more areas. Key strategic locations, such as the heights near the village of Talish and the Lalatapa height in the Fuzuli district, were cleared of enemy forces to protect Azerbaijani cities from potential threats. The intense fighting resulted in the death of 320 Armenian soldiers and the injury of more than 500.
In recognition of their heroism and bravery in defending Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and repelling Armenian aggressions, a group of Azerbaijani servicemen was honored with prestigious titles, orders, and medals by the President of Azerbaijan on April 19, 2016. Some were awarded the title of “National Hero of Azerbaijan”, along with orders like “Azerbaijan Flag” and “For Service to the Motherland”, as well as medals for their valor and military service.
As Azerbaijan and Armenia commemorate the anniversary of the April battles, it serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who fought to defend their country and protect their people.
