A Cautionary Tale: Twice Given the Wrong Surgery, I’ve Lost My Arm and My Livelihood

Yusuf Şişman, a butcher in Darıca district, has been left without the use of his arm after undergoing the wrong surgery twice. With a 59 percent disability due to hearing loss and leg issues, Şişman sought help at a private hospital in Gebze district when he experienced limited movement in his right arm. Initially diagnosed with ‘elbow sprain and strain,’ Şişman later discovered that nerve damage had occurred during the first surgery, requiring him to undergo surgery for a third time.
After the second surgery, Şişman’s condition worsened, leading to multiple hospital visits and consultations. Feeling that he had been subjected to incorrect treatment, Şişman took legal action against the hospital and the doctors involved, launching an investigation into the matter. Despite efforts to seek justice, Şişman has faced challenges in navigating the complex healthcare system and obtaining satisfactory results.
As he waits for the Ministry of Health to address his case, Şişman has had to adapt to a new job as a cleaner in a factory, unable to fulfill his duties as a butcher. The ordeal has not only impacted his physical well-being but has also taken a toll on his livelihood. The hospital, citing ongoing legal proceedings, has refrained from making any comments on the situation.
The story of Yusuf Şişman serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of patient advocacy and the need for accountability in healthcare practices. As he continues to seek recourse for the harm caused to him, Şişman’s journey sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals who fall victim to medical malpractice.
