A Fergana Man’s Homemade Eiffel Tower

In 1998, Komiljon Juraev, a football fan from Uzbekistan, had a dream of attending the FIFA World Cup in France. Despite obtaining a visa, he was unable to make the trip due to unforeseen circumstances. However, his desire to visit Paris and see the iconic Eiffel Tower never faded.

Instead of giving up on his dream, Juraev decided to bring France to his home in Kokand. He sold his car, purchased over seven tons of metal, and in 2004, completed the construction of his very own 21-meter-tall “mini Eiffel Tower” in his yard.

Juraev shared the story behind the replica tower, expressing his longing for France and how he took matters into his own hands:

“The 1998 FIFA World Cup was in France, and I had planned to go. But for some reason, I couldn’t make the trip. Instead of giving up, I decided to bring France to my home. That’s when I started building the Eiffel Tower, and in 2004, it was finished.”

Despite initial concerns about strong winds in Kokand, Juraev ensured the tower’s stability by digging a deep foundation. With the help of three welding machines, he completed the project in 40 days, using over 7 tons of metal that he financed by selling his car.

Over the years, Juraev’s Eiffel Tower has become a unique attraction for visitors. In 2008, the wife of the French ambassador to Uzbekistan and other officials visited the tower, bringing pride and joy to Juraev.

Now 74 years old, Juraev feels a sense of fulfillment as he sees his long-standing wish partially realized:

“I have my own Eiffel Tower at home, and it’s a part of my daily life. While I never got to see Paris, my son has visited France multiple times. Seeing visitors come to see the Eiffel Tower brings me immense joy.”

Komiljon Juraev’s determination and creativity have not only made his dream a reality but have also created a lasting symbol of admiration and inspiration in Kokand.
