In a recent announcement, the Spiritual Directorate of the Muslims of Kyrgyzstan reported that Abdulaziz Kary Zakirov has been elected as the new mufti of the country. The decision was made at an extraordinary kurultai of the Muslims of the Kyrgyz Republic.
At 45 years old, Zakirov received his religious education in Turkey and at the Islamic Institute in Bishkek, in addition to having a legal education. He is fluent in Arabic and Turkish. Prior to his appointment, he served as the chief imam of Bazar-Korgon district in the Jalal-Abad region.
This appointment comes with great significance as the mufti plays a crucial role in leading the religious and spiritual affairs of the Muslim community in Kyrgyzstan. The new mufti’s diverse educational and professional background is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the position.
