CHP Mayor Alleges Listening Device in Municipality; Investigation Reveals Allegation Unfounded
The Mayor of Afyonkarahisar, Burcu Köksal, from the CHP party, recently made a startling accusation against the municipality. She claimed that there was a listening and monitoring device, referred to as an “insect,” installed within the municipality’s premises. This allegation prompted an investigation by the Afyonkarahisar Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation, which began on April 19, focused on potential crimes such as ‘recording non-public conversations between individuals, violating workplace immunity by using force or threats, violating the privacy of private life.’ However, after thorough examination, the authorities found no evidence to support Mayor Köksal’s claim.
The decision regarding the investigation highlighted the use of various methods such as open-source research, image analysis, witness interviews, and inquiries to both the municipality and the alleged victim. Ultimately, it was concluded that the alleged incident was not real, and there was no basis for prosecution on behalf of the public.
Nevertheless, it was also mentioned that if Mayor Köksal fails to challenge the decision within the specified period or if her objection is dismissed, she may face charges for ‘fabricating a crime’ and ‘slander.’
The outcome of the investigation has brought relief to the municipality, dispelling the cloud of suspicion cast by the initial allegations. It remains to be seen whether Mayor Köksal will contest the decision and how this case will unfold in the future.
