Turkish Cypriot organizations and political parties unite against the use of headscarves in schools
The Turkish Cypriot Secondary Education Teachers ‘Union (KTOEÖS), the Turkish Cypriot Teachers’ Union (KTÖS), and several organizations and political parties have come together to take action against the use of headscarves in schools following changes in the disciplinary charter.
In a recent demonstration in front of the Assembly, participants expressed their firm stance against the disciplinary charter adopted by the Council of Ministers. The protesters made it clear that their actions would continue until the charter was withdrawn.
Various slogans and chants filled the air during the demonstration, with themes such as “Government Resignation”, “Unity Struggle Solidarity”, and “We will win resistance resistance” echoing through the crowd.
Speaking at the event, KTOEÖS President Selma Action declared that the struggle would continue daily until April 28. She emphasized the importance of standing against the government’s decisions and vowed to fight alongside the people until the charter was revoked.
KTÖS Secretary General Burak Maviş also addressed the crowd, urging unity and solidarity in the face of government actions. He called for an apology from YDP Chairman Erhan Arikli and emphasized the Turkish Cypriot people’s determination to defend their homeland and secular values.
Türk-Sen Chairman Arslan Bıçaklı criticized the government for overstepping its boundaries and emphasized the importance of respecting the will of the people. He called for the withdrawal of the controversial charter and warned against further divisive actions.
In a show of unity, Kamu-Sen President Metin Atan reiterated the importance of standing together in defense of the country. He demanded an apology from Erhan Arikli and called for the government to act with common sense and fairness.
CTP Chairman Tufan Erhürman stressed the need to preserve the unity of the Turkish Cypriot people and rejected any attempts to divide them. He emphasized the strength and determination of the Turkish Cypriot people to protect their heritage and values.
TDP Chairman Zeki Çeler reaffirmed the Turkish Cypriot people’s commitment to their homeland, flag, and culture, vowing never to give up on their land or their identity.
The demonstration concluded with a symbolic burning of the fire of action, symbolizing the determination of the Turkish Cypriot people to fight for their rights and values. The participants also announced the launch of a signature and support campaign to push for the withdrawal of the regulation.
