Adana Watermelon Awaits Harvest as Countdown Begins: Latest News

Adana leads Turkey in Watermelon Production

Turkey is a major producer of watermelon with 3 million 394 thousand tons produced last year alone. Among the producers in Turkey, Adana takes the first place producing 611 thousand tons on a land of approximately 93 thousand decares. As the new season approaches, producers in the Bahçe Mahallesi of Karataş district are preparing for the first harvest.

Due to the mild conditions experienced in April, harvest time for watermelons has been delayed by 8 to 10 days. Producers in Adana expect the first harvest to take place on May 18-20 this year in high tunnels. It is noted that the yield per decare in Adana is 50 percent higher than the average yield in Turkey.

In observations made last year, watermelon crops in greenhouse production yielded around 5-7 tons per decare, while field watermelons produced in the open yielded an average of 4-5 tons. The majority of watermelon production in the city of Adana takes place in Karataş, Yüreğir, and Ceyhan districts.

With high yields and dedicated producers, Turkish watermelon production is growing and remains an important industry for the country. Adana’s reputation as a leading producer will undoubtedly continue to elevate its position in the industry and bring more success to the region.
