Additional Measles Immunization Campaign to Take Place in April
An additional immunization campaign against measles to be held in Kyrgyzstan
In response to the ongoing measles outbreak in Kyrgyzstan, an additional mopping up immunization campaign is set to take place in April. Deputy Minister of Health Bubuzhan Arykbaeva made this announcement during a recent briefing, highlighting the importance of such campaigns in combating the spread of measles.
Arykbaeva emphasized that the immunization campaign is the most effective method to stop the spread of measles in the country. Currently, efforts are being made to inform and educate the public about the importance of vaccination and encouraging parents to make the right decision for their children.
During the briefing, Arykbaeva stated, “Until we increase vaccination coverage to 95 percent, measles will not stop in our country.” This statement underscores the urgent need for higher vaccination rates to effectively control and prevent further outbreaks of the disease.
Since the beginning of 2025, Kyrgyzstan has reported 4,055 cases of measles, including eight deaths. Shockingly, 95 percent of those infected were unvaccinated individuals. In Bishkek, the capital city, vaccination coverage stands at only 63 percent, highlighting the need for increased efforts to reach more residents with the measles vaccine.
The upcoming immunization campaign aims to address these gaps in vaccination coverage and protect the population from the serious consequences of measles. With concerted efforts from health authorities and the public, it is hoped that Kyrgyzstan can effectively control the spread of measles and prevent further loss of life due to this highly contagious disease.
