AI Guides Pilgrims in Mecca: Saudi Arabia’s Expansion
The General Authority for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques in Saudi Arabia is taking steps to enhance the experience of visitors and pilgrims at the Grand Mosque through the use of artificial intelligence and digital technologies.
According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), 52 screens have been deployed both inside and outside of the Grand Mosque to disseminate instructional content covering a total area of 279 square meters. This content is carefully selected by a dedicated team and translated into multiple languages to cater to the diverse needs of visitors to the mosque. The screens operate round the clock and are strategically located at entrances, exits, courtyards, and roads leading to the Grand Mosque.
In addition to the instructional screens, an innovative “robot guide” has been introduced to assist pilgrims inside the Grand Mosque. This interactive robot is equipped with a 21-inch touchscreen and is available in 11 languages, including Arabic, English, French, Russian, and Chinese. It offers a range of services designed to enhance the experience of visitors.
The robot is designed for mobility, featuring four wheels and an intelligent parking system for agile movements. It also includes high-resolution cameras to capture detailed photos of the surroundings and operates on a high-speed 5GHz Wi-Fi network for fast and efficient data transfer.
This initiative reflects the commitment of the Grand Mosque to embrace technological advancements while maintaining its traditions for the benefit of its visitors. With the integration of AI and digital technologies, the Grand Mosque aims to provide guidance and advisory materials that cater to the diverse needs of visitors and pilgrims, ultimately enhancing their overall experience at this sacred site.
