Air Astana Suspends Flights to India Amid Escalating Tensions
ASTANA – Air Astana has announced the suspension of its flights to the Indian cities of Delhi and Mumbai effective May 8. This decision comes in light of the recent closure of airspace between India and Pakistan, raising safety concerns for travelers.
Following the suspension, the airline has assured passengers that full refunds will be issued for all canceled flights. Additionally, Air Astana is actively working to arrange alternative repatriation flights, aiming to safely return Kazakh citizens and other passengers to their home countries.
In a statement, the airline emphasized its commitment to monitoring the developing situation closely and promised to keep passengers informed of any changes or updates.
Context of the Suspension
The flight disruptions coincide with heightened tensions in the region. According to reporting from the BBC, India recently launched a series of military strikes, known as Operation Sindoor, targeting specific sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. This military action followed a deadly militant attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 25 Indians and one Nepali national.
India’s Defense Ministry stated that these strikes aimed to hold those responsible accountable for the attack. Conversely, Pakistan’s military has reported significant casualties as well, with at least 31 deaths and 57 injuries attributed to the conflict. The situation remains dire, as India’s military has also reported civilian casualties due to retaliatory shelling across the border.
